You gotta go out of your way to be a jerk, or make a mistake. It’s also great if you have a goal in mind. You dont have to wait for your whole plan to come together, and you dont have to waste time trying to figure it out.

In the game, it is implied that Colt wanted to take out the Visionaries because he is looking for a way to get to the top of the ladder. He wants to leave the island and go to the top as a hero, and in killing everyone he takes out a big chunk of the ladder. This is all intentional, and he is not making a mistake, he is planning this out and is just doing what he feels is best for his future.

Not everything in the game is spelled out, but there is a way for you to get to the top, and if you are really persistent, you can get to it via a secret path. The secret path leads to the summit, and you can go from there to the top.
